At 6:46 PM, Radnor Fire Company was dispatched to the 100 block of Gallagher Road for smoke coming from the basement of an apartment building. An engine from Berwyn was also on the initial assignment.
Deputy 15 arrived on location and found smoke inside the building. A check of the basement did not reveal the source of the smoke. Once inside the front door, soot was observed on the front door of a first floor apartment. Deputy 15 established Gallagher Road Command and Assistant 15 handled Operations.
Quint 15 arrived and stretched an 1 3/4" line through the front door of the building and forced entry into the apartment. The Quint crew, lead by Battalion 15, encountered fire in the wall between the kitchen and bathroom. The main was extended to the roof. Berwyn's engine was directed to lay a 5" supply line from the hydrant at South Devon and Gallagher.
A working fire dispatch was requested which brought a ladder from Bryn Mawr Fire Company and engines from Newtown Square and Gladwyne Fire Companies. EMS units from Narberth, Marple and Paoli stood by on the scene.
As assisting crews arrived on scene, an additional 1 3/4" line was deployed to the second floor of the building. Crews were directed to open up walls and extinguish the fire spreading inside the wall. Another crew was sent to the roof to check for extension.
The fire was placed under control within the hour.
There was one firefighter injury and no injuries to any residents. Unfortunately, one pet perished during the incident.
The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal responded and assisted RTPD, the Haverford Township PD, Haverford Township Fire Marshal and Radnor Township Codes with the investigation.
The last of RFC personnel cleared the scene a little after 10 PM.
Thanks to the Manoa and Oakmont Fire Companies for standing by at RFC during the incident.
