Friday, September 4, 2009 - On August 4, 2009 at 08:11 hours the Interstate Highway box was struck for I-476 South at MM 10.0. 15-9B (Jimenez), 53-3, 53-9A (Dillon) and Sqaud-15 all hit the street within minutes. While enroute fireboard advised that the State Police were on scene with the rear of the trash truck fully involved. Due to the limited access of a water supply, the 2nd alarm was struck brinigng Company 56 (Manoa) for 2 engines and a special call above the 2nd for Company 41 (Newtown Square). 15-9B arrived to find the front of the trash truck involved. Crews from 53 and 15 stretched two handlines and quickly knocked down the bulk of the fire. Squad 56 with 56-9B (Norman Jr.) arrived and was given the assignment of checking for extension. Rescue-41 with 41-9A (Simpson) arrived and assisted with pulling the cab apart and checking for small pockets of fire. Crews from 56 found high heat present in the container and smoke coming from a port hole. After some discussion between the chief officers including 56-9 (Norman Sr) it was decided to use a foam line from Rescue-41 to fill the container. The situation was quickly brought under control without having to dump the contents of the container on the highway. Traffic was reported to be backed up through the mid-county toll plaza. During the incident 15 and 53 both had additional runs in their first run area which were handled with units from each station. Thanks to all who assisted this morning.
