ENGINE & RIT ASSIST TO KING OF PRUSSIA
Wednesday, May 26, 2010 19:42
-
Members were on station when the overhead scanners echoed a building fire dispatch for neighboring King of Prussia Fire Company (47).  Units were dispatched to the 400 block of Sharon Drive for a building fire and also dispatched in their local for another alarm.   With resources split between two calls and the house fire close to our local - we knew it was only a matter of time before Radnor was dispatched or relocated.

It did not take long, Deputy 47 arrived on location to confirm a working building fire.  He asked for additional resouces from the other Upper Merion Companies - Swedeland (48) and Swedesburg (49) and an engine and RIT from Radnor.

Engine 15-3 and Rescue 15 rolled shortly after the dispatch.  15-3 arrived on location and went to work on the roof, assisting with ventilation.  Additional members secured handlines and went into service on the Bravo side, assisting Swedeland - battling heavy fire in the garage.

Assistant Chief Maguire (15-9C) ordered relocates to the firehouse at 19:51, bringing Haverford Bureau of Fire Squad 56 from Manoa Fire Company and Tiller 24 from the Gladwyne Fire Company of Lower Merion to the 15 House.

Additional manpower from Station 15 was dispatched at 20:39, bringing Squad 15 to the scene.  The additional crews worked battling hot spots and clearing smoldering debris from the residence, allowing the initial crews a bit of a break from the hot summer-like temperatures.  Units took up at 22:50.

Radnor’s 1954 Mack B75 wins Antique Automobile Club of America (ACAA) Peterson Award
Radnor’s 1954 B75 Mack was awarded the prestigious National AACA Peterson Award, for an outstanding fire apparatus entered in a National AACA meet. The Mack was nominated for the Peterson Award based on criteria established by the AACA Board of Directors. The Peterson Award was established in 2001 by Edward L. Peterson Past President of SPAAMFAA (Society for the Preservation & Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America).
AJ (Rick) Taddeo, L. Richard (Dick) Brown and John Statts, members of Radnor Fire Company were presented the Peterson award by AACA President Michael Jones, during the National Awards ceremony at the AACA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.
The quest for the nomination started in 2006 at the National Mack show in Lititz, Pennsylvania.  Radnor’s B75 attended its first AACA meet in October 2007 at Hershey, Pennsylvania and was awarded the AACA “First Junior” Award. The following year the Mack attended the SPAAMFAA National meet in Syracuse, New York and was awarded a National First Place for Postwar- Mack Fire Apparatus. The 2009 AACA Hershey Eastern Regional Meet in October started with clouds and rain in the morning but the four judges scored the Mack with over 375 out of 400 points and was awarded the “First Senior” award- and AACA “National First Place” award.
Radnor’s Mack was then nominated for the Peterson award from a very select group of fire apparatus judged at AACA National meets throughout the entire United States. The Peterson award represents the highest award by the AACA for fire apparatus.
According to AACA records, Radnor’s Mack is the first fire company owned vehicle and the first Mack to receive the Peterson Award. Radnor’s B75 will also be featured in the 2010 March/April issue of Antique Automobile Magazine, the official publication of the AACA.
Charlie Norcini owner of Norcini’s Autobody and a board member of Radnor Fire Company stated ” It’s an honor that the Mack has received this award and national recognition for the effort of the team and the community’s support to restore and maintain this historic piece of fire apparatus” .
Radnor’s Mack is one of only 54 B75’s custom built at the Mack Plant in Allentown Pennsylvania, and one of only five remaining in fire company service. The Mack was originally purchased by Radnor in July 1954, sold to Rockingham Fire Company in April 1973, and repurchased by Radnor July 20, 2002. The restoration of the Mack B75 was completed by the Mack team at the Radnor Fire Company and would not have been possible without the support of many members of the community. .
Radnor Fire Company from Wayne, Pennsylvania was founded in 1906, and is best known as “The home of the first motorized fire pump in the United States”. The Fire Company currently provides fire and emergency services to Radnor and Tredyffrin townships and responds to over 800 fire and 2500 EMS calls annually with over 50 active volunteers and career staff. The Fire Company maintains 3 pumpers, 1 rescue, 1 aerial ladder, and 2 ambulances.  The B75 Mack is on station and serves as the signature truck for the Radnor Fire Company.

On Saturday January 30, 2010 at 0928 hours, The Radnor Fire Company was dispatched to assist Berwyn Fire Company at the Strafford Station Apartments, 415 Stafford Avenue, Tredyffrin Township. Responding units were advised by Fire Board that this was a working fire; a fact which was confirmed by Deputy Chief Maguire on his arrival.

The fire was spreading rapidly from a second floor apartment through the third floor and into the attic. Crews from Squad 15 and Ladder 15 responded directly to the front of the building and performed an interior attack on the fire while the crews from 15-1 assisted with water supply and ventilation duties.

With limited water supplies initially, these crews attacked the fire and were able to prevent extension to a significant portion of the structure. In spite of the 17 degree temperature that day, Radnor crews remained involved in an incident that ultimately required the assistance of over 125 of their fellow firefighters.

Because of their skilled attack and tireless efforts under very difficult conditions, we recognize these individuals for their dedication to the Fire Service and to the Radnor Fire Company.
